This delightful city is known as the nation’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement and has over 450 years of history, art, and culture to explore. St. Augustine was first claimed for Spain by the infamous Ponce De Leon in 1513 while searching for the fabled fountain of youth. The next few decades would see failed attempts to establish a colonial presence by both France and Spain until Spanish explorers reasserted their claim over Florida in 1565. Over the next 200 years, control of Florida shifted between Great Britain and Spain. Spain finally ceded Florida to the United States in 1819, and St. Augustine was designated capital of the Florida Territory until 1824.
St. Augustine has 42 miles of top-rated shorelines less than a half hour from the site. Feast-goers can explore the old city by tram, see the lighthouse, visit fascinating museums, experience historical re-enactments, or ride in a horse-drawn carriage, all while building lifetime Feast memories.
